There are few game developers that are as popular as Bethesda Games Softworks, with its director and executive producer Todd Howard reaching his own celebrity status in gaming circles. While many players are eager to explore the alien worlds in Starfield, Howard recently revealed that he not only believes in alien life but hopes we find it before he passes.
The interview was hosted by GQ Magazine, which caught up with Howard and several other developers from the highly-anticipated Starfield, which will be released next month. Naturally, the conversation turned to Howard’s appreciation of space exploration, saying it’s “implausible” we’re alone in the universe and that he’d like to see humanity discover alien life before he dies.
In that same vein, when asked in that same conversation what he thinks the biggest flaw in the simulation of life would be, his simple reply was “death.” This may also be what’s keeping him from traveling to space, even though he’s had offers. Howard explains his thought process in the quote below.
“I’ve been offered in the past,” he reveals, semi-casually. “I think it would be amazing, but… maybe when I’m older.”

He recognizes that we have come a long way in space exploration, having grown up with an older brother born on the day of the Apollo 11 moon landing and a grandfather who lived near the Kennedy Space Center. However, it seems that he recognizes how far we have left to go to create a truly safe passenger experience for non-seasoned astronauts or when he’s accomplished more of what he’s wanted.
