In a game as fantastical and full of intrigue as Baldur’s Gate 3, you come across an array of characters: the undead surgeons, the home surgery-loving bards, and then, well, there’s the strange ox. On the surface, it appears like just another ox – your usual farmyard dweller, standing nonchalantly and emitting occasional “moos.” But as many of us have found out, things in BG3 are seldom as simple as they seem. Yet as you draw closer, check starts occurring, and you realize maybe there is something different about this Ox after all…
What Does the Strange Ox Do in Baldur’s Gate 3
Once you’ve got the ability to with the Strange Ox via Speak with Animals or something of the sort (who knew you’d need to brush up on your animal linguistics in BG3, right?), you’ll find that it’s not quite the simple creature it appears to be. In the heart of the Druid’s Grove, you can strike up a conversation with our ox friend. And guess what? This seemingly mundane beast reveals it’s planning a trip to the bustling city of Baldur’s Gate. Now, isn’t that peculiar for an ox?

What Does Killing the Strange Ox Do In BG3?
Before I share this part, I just want to point out that no oxen were harmed in the making of this guide. Well, at least not by me… on this save, so it doesn’t actually count. When the decision was made to kill the Strange Ox in Baldur’s Gate 3 (don’t judge, it’s all part of the game!), the docile beast didn’t go out quietly. No, it exploded in a shower of acid.
In the aftermath of this, ahem, ‘explosive’ event, our brave (or should I say, ruthless) gamer (aka me) found an interesting item amidst the remnants. It was a Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring. This magical ring grants an extra d4 to all checks while shapeshifting and disguising oneself.
So there you have it, folks. Killing the Strange Ox in Baldur’s Gate 3 might seem harsh, but it’s one way to nab yourself a pretty handy magical item. Will you be the animal whisperer, the ox slayer, or maybe a bit of both? But hey, that’s what makes BG3 so much fun!
