Sports games don’t often get the love they deserve, especially when many of these major brands were or are able to release a new title every year. While most recent sports games seek to evolve and complicate mechanics, the upcoming Legend Bowl from Super Pixel Games plans to take players back to the early 1990s with the retro Tecmo Bowl-style gameplay and it’s finally received a release timeline.
The predecessors to the Madden games, this football arcade style of gameplay allowed players to finally play their favorite sport and it’s being revolutionized by Super Pixel Games. Legend Bowl is expected to release this summer with a new trailer showing all the upcoming features. The trailer announcing the release date shows more than playing the game, with sections dedicated to customization and planning.
To Legend Bowl‘s credit, this title looks very similar to earlier Madden games with similar play-selecting features. The characters’ uniforms even bear a striking resemblance to those worn by the professionals who play in the NFL. The gameplay looks very simple and that could genuinely go to the game’s credit as long as it’s handled well.
There are different weather effects, character customization, and maybe even some form of team management. You’ll be able to view stats, player history, and things like salary. It’s unclear how much of an impact you’ll have on this, but it already seems leagues beyond what players last saw from the Tecmo games. With the release scheduled for sometime in the next few months, we’ll likely find out
